TMJ & BRUXISM TREATMENT

Serene Dentistry of North Salt Lake

When you wake up in the morning, do you notice headaches, jaw, or shoulder pain? Has your partner taken up residence on the sofa because of your loud snoring or strange popping or clicking noises while you sleep?

If you answer yes to either question, you may be grinding your teeth, a common sign of TMJ problems known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

In some cases, TMD symptoms like jaw pain can overtake your life and leave you desperate for relief. At Serene Dental of North Salt Lake, Dr. Will Bates offers treatment for TMJ pain or dysfunction using a small customized oral appliance.

The Difference between TMJ and TMD

Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or jaw joints are some of the most heavily used joints in the body. Yawning, laughing, smiling, speaking—it’s easy to see how the TMJ can become overworked, especially if you add a teeth-grinding habit called bruxism. TMJ problems can also be related to a head or jaw injury, malocclusion (bad dental bite), or arthritis.

TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder is the name we use when the TMJ isn’t functioning properly. Many people suffer from TMD. Common symptoms like teeth grinding (bruxism), worn down or broken teeth, jaw and facial pain, and severe headaches impact millions of lives.

Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

There are numerous symptoms of TMD to look for:

  • Jaw pain
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw
  • Difficulty opening or closing your mouth
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Mouth locked open or closed
  • Tinnitus or ringing in the ears
  • Pain when yawning or chewing

TMJ Pain Relief in North Salt Lake, UT

If you experience one or more of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Bates. He will take digital and panoramic x-rays of your mouth to identify the reason for your TMJ pain.

Our TMJ dentist will also evaluate your dental bite to determine the relationship between the way your TMJ functions and the way your teeth come together when you bite down. Treatment depends on your unique needs, but Dr. Bates helps many TMJ pain sufferers find relief without complex or costly treatment.

The simplest approach is to customize a night guard—also referred to as an occlusal guard or oral splint—that prevents your upper and lower jaw from meeting when you bite down. Worn during sleep, the appliance absorbs the grinding and clenching force and gives your TMJ a chance to rest and recover while you sleep.

Since it is a complex disorder, it can be difficult or impossible to identify a single source for TMD discomfort. In this case, we’ll provide the relief you need by recommending TMJ pain treatment, including:

  • Oral splints or occlusal guards
  • Anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen
  • Physical therapy
  • Relaxation therapies and stress management
  • Prescription muscle relaxers
  • BOTOX® injections

Excellent Family Care

My two-year-old and I just had our first appointments here and we had a great experience! The office was clean and modern and the staff were very welcoming. It was nice to find somewhere that can see the whole family! (And they really can, my two-year-old was able to get his teeth examined and cleaned!)
