The story of this area begins in 1847, when Brigham Young sent pioneers north from the Salt Lake Valley in search of pastureland. Settlers found steaming hot springs and marshy grasslands to the west and tall grasses covering the eastern hillsides. The rocky slopes were not ideal for crops or cattle, but they supplied sand and gravel, and early homesteaders claimed land along the spring beds below.
Travelers moving between Salt Lake City and the northern settlements helped shape the local economy. An early settler named William Lukar opened a combination store and restaurant where people could rest along the way. In 1916, a meat packing company began operating on what is now Center Street, shipping processed meat around the world until the plant closed in 1972.
Water is what turned the area into a town. In 1946, a developer bought hillside land for new homes and secured an agreement for water from the McDuff and McNeil springs, leaving residents below the highway worried about their own supply. Neighbors petitioned Davis County, and on September 3, 1946, about 456 acres became the incorporated town of North Salt Lake. The name came from the small post office by the railroad tracks, and Ray Hatch was elected the first town president in 1949.
North Salt Lake officially became a city in 1961 with roughly 1,650 residents. Today it is home to more than 21,000 people, with an industrial corridor stretching west toward the Great Salt Lake and neighborhoods climbing the Wasatch foothills to the east.
