A CHILD’S SMILE changes fast. Baby teeth arrive, wiggle loose, and give way to permanent ones, all before most kids finish elementary school. Building strong dental habits early sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy teeth. Here are some practical tips for parents to help their kids’ smiles grow up right.

Start Early, Even Before the First Tooth

Oral care begins before that first tooth pokes through. Wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings to clear away bacteria. Once teeth appear, switch to a soft-bristled, age-appropriate toothbrush. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling a first dental visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth coming in. Early visits help your child get comfortable with the dentist and let your provider catch any issues before they become bigger problems.

Brush Twice a Day, Every Day

Once your child has teeth, brushing twice daily should become non-negotiable. For kids under three, use a smear of fluoride toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. Kids ages three to six can move up to a pea-sized amount. Supervise brushing until your child can reliably spit rather than swallow, and keep helping with technique until around age seven or eight, since young kids often lack the fine motor skills to clean every surface well.

Make Flossing a Habit Too

As soon as two teeth touch, flossing matters. It removes food particles and plaque from spots a toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing might feel like an extra step for a wiggly toddler, but turning it into a quick daily routine, perhaps paired with a favorite song, helps it stick.

Watch What They Snack On

Diet plays a huge role in cavity prevention. Sticky, sugary snacks like gummies, dried fruit, and candy cling to teeth and feed the bacteria that cause decay. Frequent sipping on juice or sports drinks throughout the day is often worse than an occasional dessert, since it bathes teeth in sugar for extended periods. Encourage water between meals, and try to keep sweets to mealtimes when saliva production is higher and can help wash sugars away.

Don’t Skip Regular Checkups

Routine dental visits, usually every six months, allow your dentist to catch small problems before they turn into painful ones. These visits also often include fluoride treatments and, when appropriate, dental sealants, which coat the chewing surfaces of molars to block out cavity-causing bacteria.

Lead by Example

Kids learn by watching. When they see parents and older siblings brushing and flossing consistently, they’re more likely to view good oral hygiene as simply part of daily life rather than a chore imposed on them.

A Foundation for Life

Healthy habits formed in childhood tend to carry into adulthood. By starting early, staying consistent, and partnering with your pediatric dentist, you’re giving your child more than just cavity-free checkups. You’re helping build the foundation for a confident, healthy smile that lasts well beyond their growing years. If it has been a while since your child’s last visit, now is a great time to schedule one.

Excellent Family Care

My two-year-old and I just had our first appointments here and we had a great experience! The office was clean and modern and the staff were very welcoming. It was nice to find somewhere that can see the whole family! (And they really can, my two-year-old was able to get his teeth examined and cleaned!)
